OUR OPEN INNOVATION APPROACH

The Innovation Partnership Network (IPN) of Konica Minolta Global R&D follows an open innovation approach for tapping into external knowledge, inspiration and strategic cooperation across the world. Our laboratories collaborate with various external technological partners, such as univerisities, R&D centers and industrial organisations, to create novel solutions and drive the transformation of digital workplaces in the context of offices, healthcare and manufacturing. Konica Minolta Global R&D is eager to collaborate and share ideas and innovations and to take part in research challenges with a growing network of academic and industrial technological partners.

We establish collaborations with academia and R&D centres that are able to support the technology transfer and co-develop in the spirit of partnership the next frontier of technological solutions for the industry domain. We actively play a part in public fund opportunities that aligns with our strategic technological roadmaps and participate with several Universities in exchange programs that support student mobility and that brings in fresh ideas that spark inspiration and motivation.

King's College London

Since 2017, Konica Minolta Global R&D and King’s College London have been collaborating on the design of networking solutions for serving resource-demanding novel application such as immersive video conferencing with the use of augmented and virtual reality. The joint research was mainly focused on software-driven networking, and edge computing, including the LightEdge solution. We are exploring how an infrastructure can optimally orchestrate multiple autonomous AI engines, for innovative applications such as smart environment, robotics, and natural language processing, in a variety of industry sectors such as manufacturing, telecommunication and healthcare.

Fondazione Bruno Kessler

The latest collaboration with Fondazione Brunno Kessler (FBK), Italy, revolves around an exciting merger of Artificial Intelligence and Hybrid Cloud Solutions. Researches from both establishments are coordinated to achieve distributed, AI-driven orchestration of microservices in customised application settings, allowing for continuous service delivery, robust self-healing of critical services as well as predictive maintenance; a vast improvement in overall operational capability and fault tolerance of today’s orchestration systems. The solution is expected to play a great role in the Internet of Things (IoT) Analytics, and Robotics.

HAL Robotics

We are happy to announce a series of research collaborations devoted to service discovery in robotics with HAL Robotics, a robotic software firm based in London and Paris. Researchers will allocate their efforts towards designing a platform as a service (PaaS) solution that will enable Robotic Process Automation by design in a variety of industrial sectors including Construction, Manufacturing and Agriculture. Besides reducing the amount of hazardous work the human beings must carry out themselves, the solution promises to manifests itself not only as a catalyst for critical innovation in robotics but also in terms of an improved bottom line in efficiency in most vital sectors.

Italian Institute of Technology (IIT)

Since 2017, Konica Minolta Global R&D and Istituto Italiano di Tecnologia (IIT) have been collaborating on a research partnership in the field of humanoid robotics. IIT designed and developed R1, the humanoid robot on which the Rome lab of Konica Minolta is working on, enabling autonomous and cognitive capabilities through Machine Learning and Computer Vision alorithms.

Since 2019, Konica Minolta Global R&D has been collaborating with the Univerity of Rome “La Sapienza” hosting undergraduates and graduates students with strong skills in the field of Computer Vision and robotics.

Next2U

Since 2019, Konica Minolta Global R&D and Next2U s.r.l. have been signed a Partnership agreement which aims to prototype smart multiservice devices for the manufacturing and healthcare sectors. In particular, the Rome laboratory of Konica Minolta is bringing its expertise in algorithms and solutions for human activities recognition, while Next2U those for people psychophysical status assessment. Moreover, Konica Minolta Global R&D provides system engineering solutions (the platform on which the algorithms will be installed) and acceleration techniques of Machine Learning algorithms.

Since 2018, Konica Minolta Global R&D has been collaborating with the Italian hospital “Casa Sollievo della Sofferenza”, experimenting in the hospital POC in the field of Computer Vision and humanoid robotics.

Fraunhofer MEVIS

As a world-leading research institute in Medical Image Computing, Fraunhofer MEVIS has been a trusted partner for Konica Minolta Global R&D for years. The collaboration aims at bringing novel data science tools into practical clinical application – from radiological imaging to digital pathology. Through rapid prototyping and powerful web-based frameworks, user-centered methods are explored to make complex algorithmic results easily accessible to clinicians and to guide clinical decision-making.

Technical University of Munich

Konica Minolta Global R&D is collaborating with several groups from TU Munich. In particular there is a close relationship to the CAMP chair, a world-leading group in the field of computer-aided medical procedures. Konica Minolta collaborates with TU Munich through student mentorship and guest lecturer activities in the fields of AI and computer vision for healthcare. In addition, Konica Minolta is also a proud partner of student innovation courses. In the MedInnovate and the MedTech OneWorld Students programs, creative, out-of-the-box-thinking students envision innovative healthcare solutions.

Since September 2015, Konica Minolta Laboratory Europe has been cooperating with the Faculty of Informatics of the Masaryk University in Brno on several research topics. We are jointly researching through master and doctoral thesis sponsorship development of novel NLP algorithms, revolutionalize way how people cooperate with computer by new methods of human to machine interactions as well as helping to advance algorithms understanding new large unstructured data sets.

Czech National AI Strategy

From 2018 we are part of goverment working group for AI integration into the Czech Republic society and businesses. We represent voice of SMB in the group and help government to address SMB needs in regulation in Czech and EU level. We are also supporting educational roadshows showcasing Konica Minolta product and services in paper-less office enabled by AI technologies.
